HORSEBACK

Ever wanted to spend the day as a cowboy or girl? If so, this is the trip for you.
Release yourself and enjoy the free spirit of the horses as you guide
them through the mountains or across the sandy, pristine beaches of Honduras.

No previous experience is necessary, however if you are an experienced horseback
rider we'll reserve some spirited horses suited just right for you.

HORSE TREKKING IN THE MOUNTAINS

TO LA PITA PETROGLYPH ROCK AN EXCEPTIONAL Horse Trek, through
La Colorada invisible Ruins to a Petroglyph rock, similar to the ones in
Rio Platano, on the periphery of Pico Bonito National Park.

Starting at the OMEGA JUNGLE LODGE we drive upriver,
almost to the end of the road, to a farmer village called Rio Viejo.
There we saddle our horses and ride up the Rio Viejo riverbed.

We cross the river and we begin galloping (if you feel up to it!),
until we come to a small adobe and thatched roof village
called La Colorada. From here on we see 61 hills, which are
said to cover Chibcha-Mayan temples. Here we ride our horses
up a steep mountain range - with an excellent view over
three valleys - then down to a place on the river shore called La Pita:
where we discover 4 or 5 remote huts and their inhabitants.

We cross the river again, and 1 km onwards we come to a beautiful
carved rock, typical of the Petroglyphs of the Rio Platano. A Chibcha tribe
lived here about 2000 years ago.

After a fruity picnic we turn around, this time following the river
downstream, until we are back in Rio Viejo. The ride back to the
OMEGA LODGE through stunning scenery takes about 25 min. by 4x4.

LODGE HORSE TREKKING IN THE MOUNTAINS

TO LA COLORADA INVISIBLE RUINS AN EXCEPTIONAL Horse Trek: on the riverbed of the “Old” River we ride through the adobe village of La Colorada, in order to reach the invisible Chibcha-Mayan Ruins on the periphery of Pico Bonito National Park.

Starting at the OMEGA JUNGLE LODGE we drive upriver, almost to the
end of the road, to a farmer village called Rio Viejo. There we saddle our
horses and ride up the Rio Viejo riverbed.

We cross the river, and we begin galloping (if you feel up to it!), until
we come to a small adobe and thatched roof village called La Colorada.

ancient winds blowing around under our noses!

Later we ride our horses down to the riverbed of the “Rio Viejo” where we
will discover a creek, ending in a really cool pool: perfect for a refreshing
swim and a fruity picnic by the side. The ride back to Rio Viejo village goes
through a variety of different scenery and traverses the wild flowing river.

Back in the village we say goodbye to our horses, the ride back to the
OMEGA JUNGLE LODGE through beautiful scenery takes about 25 min. by 4x4.

BEACH RIDING

OUR AMAZING horseback riding trip features deserted beaches and traditional farmland.
Trained by real “cowboys”, the horses you ride are excellent!!

For beginners and advanced riders! Starting at the OMEGA JUNGLE LODGE
or in La Ceiba we drive 10 min. west. We leave the paved road
behind and follow a dirt road until we reach a horse and
cattle farm with heaps of horses (ranging from timid for
beginners to lively for those more advanced riders)
and of course real cowboys and our resident Honduran
‘Horse Whisperer’.

From here it is just a short ride to the
beach. Our local guide “El Chino” is the best horseback rider
in the area! Gallop along the empty beach - or take it easy and
enjoy nature on the back of your horse, majestic Pico Bonito is always on our left.

Just at its river mouth we cross the Rio Bonito, there are a few fishermen
and gauchos, and the nature around us is awe-inspiring. We have a fruity
picnic right at the beach - don’t forget your bathing suite! The ride back
is through savanna, fantastic for galloping!

The beach is always close so you can guide your horse wherever you want!
The car ride back to La Ceiba takes about 15 min., to the OMEGA LODGE
through beautiful scenery an additional 20 min.
